Keene Of course no ideals related to a God or gods exist in Confucianism, and they didn’t exist in the Japan of long ago either. But to give a silly example, say a burglar robs a store, kills an elderly woman in the process, and is later caught. He’s interrogated and eventually confesses to the crime. In Japan, a person in that situation will always say, “I’m sorry,” or “I’ve done a terrible thing,” right? That’s what I always read in the papers, at least. Is that just what newspapers like to print? I think in other countries criminals deny they’ve committed a crime. They rarely confess. And if they do, it’s reluctantly and without apologies. In Japan—at least according to the newspapers—even the perpetrator of the most horrible murder or robbery or kidnapping will admit to their crimes and apologize in very Confucian terms. It’s not that they feel they’ve sinned against any god, but because they feel guilt towards society.
